Have you run out of gas, and had to push your car off the highway?
I never have, but I was a mechanic for several years and had to push dead cars inside so they could be worked on.
Pushing them yourself is no fun, as most of you that have done it can attest to.
Oldcastle Industrial Minerals has an employee that does that every day.
Now he does not push a car, but he pushes and pulls pallets that weigh the same @3000 lbs
You can say, why does he not use a forklift? That is simple. He has a medical condition that does not allow him to operate one.
Well someone else can move them for him, you say.
When someone is working along side him that does happen, but not the majority of the time.
This person is a hard worker and has many years with the company, so he does his job and is grateful that he has a job.
so he does not say a word as pushing 3000lb skids with a pallet jack day after day has to be taking a toll on his back.
I have used the pallet jack when forklifts were not available, and it is not an easy thing, especially if you hit a little piece of debris.
It is just a shame that the company sits back and will allow this person to eventually damage his back when a electric pallet jack could be purchased or leased.
This is the kind of things that this website will highlight, when money is involved, safety will always be last.
Now I am not saying the company is not quick to act when money is not involved making policy changes to make things safer, or that the safty of working there has not improved in the time that I have been there. I am just demonstrating the lack of initiative when money is a factor.
That will be the theme of this website. and if management reads this, I hope you look at things different and change this perception in the workplace, as I am not alone.
